Elise Smith has been teaching Pilates since she received her Instructor Certification from Long Beach Dance Conditioning (LBDC) in 2007. Through LBDC Elise studied under Marie-Jose Blom and Alicia Head. She began ballet training at a young age and was confronted with dance related injuries the more seriously she studied ballet. Through ballet, she began to explore the therapeutic benefits of Pilates. After spending four years under the mentorship of Master Pilates instructors who were also dancers, Elise chose to take time away from academic schooling to pursue a Pilates Instructor Certification. Thus, Elise brings a strong dance background and rehabilitative approach to her teaching practice. She brings body positive and harm reduction approaches to her instruction and approaches Pilates and fitness in a way that considers what is best for the whole body. Elise specializes in working with people rehabilitating from injuries, pre and postpartum individuals, queer folks, and dancers, among others. She has been praised for her ability to relax clients while still making them feel mysteriously sore the next day! Elise graduated from Smith College with a degree in the Study of Women and Gender, and Anthropology. When she is not teaching, she is partaking in her other line of work, sex education as well as in local prison abolition activism. She also enjoys studying herbalism, biking, camping, and traveling!
